Helping Children with a Move

Moving can be a huge transition for children. Behaviors and emotions can change drastically especially if parents seem stressed.

We want you to be prepared.

Here are a few tips to help them adjust!

Before you move

Explain why are you moving.
Talk about the benefits and the exciting possibilities of moving.
Show the children the new home and let them pick their new room if possible. Show photos if it is a long-distance move.
Visit their new school and the surrounding community.
Try to visit all your children’s favorite places.
Plan their new bedroom and have them help in some decisions.
Have children do good-bye letters and phone calls. Give new address to encourage children to write to each other.
Scrapbooking is a great way to store memories of their old home.
Have a good-bye party and provide a keepsake like a t-shirt or scrapbook for all their friends to sign.
Reassure children that they will always remember their friends.

During your move

Reassure your children about your move.
Keep them involved in the process.
Give them a box they can personally pack and draw on so they know what is inside.
If traveling long distance buy souvenirs or postcards to remember the trip.

After the move

Help them find their personally packed box and let them unpack it.
Let them have all the moving boxes so they can play while you unpack!
Give them a new scrapbook or diary for their new home.
Visit all the places you may go to in the future, i.e. new school, church, neighborhood park, or shopping mall.
Encourage them to join new extracurricular activities.
Help them to make new friends and invite them over.
Remind them to send letters to old friends.
Keep daily routines as normal as possible.
